Mixed media mosaics

These mosaics incorporate a range of materials, which may include various types of glass tile, smalti (Byzantine glass) and unglazed ceramic as well as found objects such as old ceramic, discarded items and natural stone.

The particular qualities of the different materials are used to enhance the theme of the mosaic. They may vary in thickness and contain unique colours or patterns, so the mosaics are made by the direct method and are often left ungrouted, as the irregularity of the surface is integral to the design.

Mexican carpet

This mosaic is made of mixed mosaic tiles plus found objects, and was inspired by particular found objects - pieces of ceramic and glass and the colours in a range of glass smalti which suggested the Mexican carpet theme. It is part of an ongoing set of works on a 'magic carpet' theme, which takes a journey around the world. The starting point is a particular material or found object and what it suggests to the artist.
